Essex business goes global

Cheeky Panda was formed in 2016 by entrepreneur Julie Chen in Essex. Julie had developed a unique use for leftover bamboo by converting it into luxury toilet tissue.

Cheeky Panda contacted Enterprise Europe Network when the business was ready to enter new markets but Julie had concerns over its Intellectual Property Rights. Heather Benham, our Innovation Adviser guided Julie and suggested effective ways to secure their brand in new markets.

“For our international trademark we went through Enterprise Europe Network, who were very good and detailed, and introduced us to local IP specialists. The registration was approved within six months.”

Trade marking Cheeky Panda in the UK and across Europe was essential and we’re proud to say we supported the company to do this. The company is already ranked among Amazon’s top selling well-being brands and is stocked in more than 100 organic and natural stores across the UK.

7 tips to secure your Intellectual Property (IP):

  1. Contact EEN for an initial discussion about your IP needs
  2. Find out if your proposed trademark or patent has already been registered by exploring IP information from the UK's Intellectual Property Office, World Intellectual Patent Organization, and the European Patent Office
  3. Make sure all third parties sign a non-disclosure agreement before all IP discussions
  4. Pinpoint the things you want to protect, such as your company name, logo or packaging, and why you want to protect them
  5. IP rights are territorial so define the markets you’re going to protect your property in
  6. If you’re going to register in more than three European countries, save time and money by applying for an EU-wide trademark
  7. Engage a specialist IP lawyer early on for registering patents and be patient – it’s a five-year process

Hertfordshire business finds their match

Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) East of England recently helped Matrix Sports find an international manufacturing partner. Matrix Sports is a global leader in sporting goods, apparel manufacturing, distributing and retailing.  Matrix Sports approached EEN looking for new manufacturing partners that were more local to Rickmansworth, UK.

For Matrix Sports it was an attractive prospect to find a European supplier because company founder Sunil wanted to reduce his importing and exporting costs and increase the quality of the products he supplies. Matrix Sports used our partnering database which holds thousands of potential business partners.

The company received many expressions of interest (EOIs) from various EU countries in the first six months of the profile publication. It was the EOI from Polish company ISKIERKA Sportswear that stood out from the crowd.

“We have had a wonderful experience and we are doing a great job right now with the supplier. Thanks to you for such wonderful work”.

Sunil Gupta (CEO Matrix Sports). Hertfordshire based Matrix Sports expect to see an increase in turnover and headcount as a result of their partnership.
