Innovate UK’s Energy Catalyst programme aims to support businesses to develop innovative, sustainable energy technologies and business models to accelerate clean energy transition in developing and emerging economies, and to accelerate UK innovation in the energy sector from its earliest stage through to commercialisation.

What is Energy Catalyst?

Funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and Department for International Development (DfiD) as part of their Transforming Energy Access programme, Energy Catalyst Round 8 will launch in June 2020.

A key focus is to address the clean energy access challenge in sub-Saharan Africa and south and south-east Asia. The countries selected for this round have particular needs in terms of developing clean, sustainable energy technologies. They are:

  • Ghana
  • Malawi
  • Nepal
  • Nigeria
  • Rwanda
  • South Africa
  • Senegal
  • Togo
  • Uganda
  • Vietnam
  • Zambia

International brokerage trips

To support the technology funding, which is expected to open in June 2020, a number of international brokerage trips are being planned between February and July 2020. Run by EEN and KTN, the brokerage trips will help organisations applying for the Energy Catalyst Round 8 gain an understanding of the energy access issues in these countries and find links to potential partners for submitting an Energy Catalyst Application.

Each typically lasting one week, these brokerage visits form part of the collaboration-building to enable businesses to develop equitable partnerships between the UK and overseas organisations. There are typically ten to 12 participant companies on each mission. These missions have been very useful in helping companies apply to the Energy Catalyst as well as form important connections for participating businesses. An organisation can attend up to two GCRF missions.

Three stages of the mission

There are three stages to each brokerage trip. A pre-visit briefing will provide:

  • background information on the market
  • training on how to improve your business and technology pitch for in-country brokering
  • hints and tips session on making an application to Innovate UK.

The visit provides access to:

  • NGOs
  • Local businesses
  • Academics
  • Government officials
  • Potential partners to apply into Energy Catalyst Round 8

On return to the UK, EEN and KTN will support the companies to make the most of the opportunities generated on the mission and to put together a funding proposal to the Energy Catalyst Round 8.
