Partnering opportunity

Anchor plate for the temporary fixation of hollow organs.

Summary

A German university has developed a novel technique to fix hollow organs such as the stomach or the bladder to an outer structure. The main field of application in particular is the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) probe. The university offers a license agreement as well as a technical cooperation agreement to industrial partners.

Description

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) probes are applied by various techniques, especially by the so-called pull-through and the direct punctation (or push) technique. The latter is predominantly applied, when a stenosis of the upper gastrointestinal tract by a tumor prohibits oral access due to the consumption of space, but also due to the fact that the pull-through method is discussed in the literature to cause inoculation metastasis. A German university now improved this procedure. Application of PEG-probes by the push technique conventionally requires the fixation of the stomach at the abdominal wall at three points (gastropexy). Subsequently, punctation is performed in the centre of these three fixation points. By means of the present invention of the German university, the three fixation points are dispensable, since the stomach is laminar fixated by the anchor plate during expansion of the punctation channel. The PEG-probes consist of several wires of a shape memory alloy, that each end in a loop which is rectangular to the wire axis. After insertion in an upright position through a cannula into the stomach, the alloys are shifted out and regain their loop-form due to the material properties. Therefore, fixation of hollow organs is feasible with only one punctation with this technique. The university offers a license agreement as well as technical cooperation agreements to companies that are interested in further developing the existing prototype. This technology offer addresses companies that produce surgical instruments.

Advantages and innovations

Compared to the current procedures this invention improves the gastropexy; the three fixation points are dispensable, since the stomach is laminar fixated by the anchor plate during expansion of the punctation channel (only one puncture is needed). Other advantages are: -Low risk of infection -Low risk of bleeding -Time- and cost-saving
