A Spanish University offers a new methodology for the integral management of the vineyard
Researchers from a Spanish university with extensive knowledge in plant physiology and specifically in viticulture, offer an integral procedure for the monitoring and management of vineyard crop. The main innovation is the application of new technologies in the cultivation of the vine to monitor productivity variations. Companies related to the wine industry and interested in this new methodology are being sought. The types of collaboration offered are research cooperation or service agreement.
Companies related to wine industry such as vineyard owners or wine producers interested in implementing this new methodology are being sought. The types of collaboration offered are research cooperation agreement where know-how can be applied in the premises of a client in exchange for obtaining new data for research or services agreement where integral vineyard management plans could be custom designed.
A Spanish research group specialized in plant physiology has developed a new procedure for the integral management of the vineyard. Its research activities are focused on plant responses to water stress, the biology of plants submitted to Mediterranean conditions and the development of the potential of biotechnology and agronomy applications in the field of viticulture and oenology. The group aims to contribute to a deeper knowledge in this research field with maximum competitiveness and scientific excellence. In addition, the research group, as an expert in this field, is also a member of the Spanish technology platform for plant biotechnology (BIOVEGEN) and the Spanish wine technology platform (PTV). The main challenge in the sector is to achieve a sustainable viticulture agrosystem that implies an adaptation to a climate change scenario, the agronomic management of the vineyard and the irrigation strategies. The methodology developed aims to improve vineyard cultivation taking into account physical, biological and chemical factors, such as climatic conditions or specific nutritional requirements. The integral management of the vineyard includes advice on pruning, treatment of diseases, irrigation management, chemical analysis, etc. The main activity is designed, optimizing the water uses to increase the quality and productivity of grapes by applying innovative technologies such as drones or infrared thermography. Another application of these technologies is to provide the necessary information to control the growth and development of crops. Moreover, the group has experience in the development of field experiments under specific conditions to evaluate new procedures for small-scale wine production. The research group is looking for companies related to wine industry and interested in implementing this new methodology. The types of collaboration offered are research cooperation agreement where know-how can be applied in the premises of a client in exchange for obtaining new data for research or services agreement where integral vineyard management plans could be custom designed.
Advantages and innovations
This new methodology covers the whole process of wine production, from the vine cultivation to the wine elaboration. A global understanding of the ecophysiology of plants and their nutritional and water needs helps manage vineyards more efficiently. Researchers have successfully used drones and infrared thermography among other advanced technologies to monitor growth and development in real time. These technologies allow to expand the monitoring potential from individually selected leaves to several hectares of vineyard and provide valuable feedback on irrigation, safety and other crucial parameters in the plant framing.
