Expertise in coatings and nanomaterials for concentrated solar power (CSP) plants for applying to H2020 R&D projects

A Spanish non-profit private technological centre has a large trajectory in international cooperation. The centre has coordinated 19 of the total 43 participated European projects from FP4 to Horizon 2020 including LIFE and ECO-Innovation programs. The main R&D fields where the centre develops its activities are nanotechnology, new materials and advanced-environment technologies. The centre has a great expertise in the development and production of nanomaterials and nano-coatings with advanced properties and is currently working in projects related with thermal solar power plants. In this way, in thermal energy storage, the centre could provide improvements in different systems such as: - Self-cleaning effects based on hydrophilic coatings to be applied in mirrors of heliostats. These coatings maintain the surface of the mirror clean in order to avoid dust accumulation on solar collectors causing energy losses and requiring cost cleaning procedures. The coatings do not modify the reflectance capacity of the mirror. - IR (infrared) absorbing coatings developed by the centre. These selective coatings can be applied over receivers in order to increase their efficiency. - The centre has developed anticorrosion coatings for metal substrates. These coatings are applied in storage tanks that should address extreme conditions of high temperature and corrosive environment with the aim of using cheaper steel grades. - Nanoparticles to additive solar molten salts improving its thermophysical properties. The technology centre is offering its expertise in order to form a consortium with research technology development performers (RTDs), industries and SMEs related to a range of activities related to photovoltaic energy in the context of H2020 calls such as the topic LC-SC3-RES-35-2020: Reduce the cost and increase performance and reliability of CSP (concentrated solar power) plants.

Laboratory solutions that are replicable and can be-upscaled: the capabilities of the centre to reach TRL7 (technology readiness level) regarding nanomaterials production and functional coatings and surfaces is guaranteed by its infrastructure. Their competitive advantage is their high flexibility in production capacity (from tens of grams/hour to kilograms/hour) of nanomaterials. They have several production lines of flame spray pyrolysis synthesis technology (FSP). In addition, wet-chemistry and coatings production is also developed from lab to pilot scale counting with pilot scale reactors (up to 1000 l), dispersion and wet milling lines; robot and spray booths; dip coating systems and an automated spraying coating line for pipelines.
