Innovative device for the remote control and management of charging process of electric vehicles
Spanish technology centre has developed an innovative device which comprises hardware and software tool that allows remotely controlling and managing the electric vehicles (EV) charging process. Spanish horizontally integrated technology centre specialized in offering global solutions to companies, offers innovative solutions to companies to improve their processes, systems and products, improving their competitiveness and creating new business opportunities. Its disciplinary teams work in five areas of knowledge that correspond to different economic and technological sectors: industry, energy and environment, construction and infrastructures, agrofood and health and quality of life. In the framework of an European project, the technology centre has developed an innovative device which comprises both a hardware and software tool that allows remotely controlling and managing the electric vehicles (EV) charging process. Electric vehicles (EV) are progressively entering the market, and there are already a number of charging solutions in place, though they are often quite expensive and not always allowing a smart communication with the vehicle. Moreover, compatibility is also a concern for some EV brands. The technology offered is a smart metering device that allows the management of local charging by private EV drivers and fleet owners. It is meant for low charging mode (schuko connector, max 16A) when charging is made at home or at the local premises of the fleet owner. The device consists of a set of male & female schuko connectors and a box in between that will hold the electronics needed to manage the usage and communications. The device will be connected between the schuko EV plug and the power supply schuko socket. The prototype, that has been already patented, has three modules: Module 1: main controller and storage unit. Access is via a web browser, so as to avoid dependence on any of the current operative systems (windows, linux, android, IOs, etc.) This module is in charge of implementing the execution logic needed to support the different functionalities: • Charging: starting time and related duration of each charging process is defined. • Configuration: date / time and wi-fi • Data: communication with the server. Registered data are sent to a server located in the cloud. Module 2: Charging register: this module comprises the hardware required to register data related to the charging process in terms of energy. Module 3: Communications: this module deals with the wi-fi connection between the user and the system. Some features of the appliance are: • Charging programming: daily and weekly • Recording of energy required for charging • Information on configuration and energy required for charging will be stored at an internet server • The internet server will offer tools for data visualization, analysis, costs management, etc. • Connection with the controller area network (CAN) bus of the EV by means of a bluetooth kit. This functionality will be available only for certain EV models, and different functionalities will be available (e.g. the battery state of charge). They are looking for last mile delivery companies using EV vehicles or any EV user who want to manage the local charging of their vehicles by establishing commercial agreements with technical assistance. The technology centre is also interested in research cooperation agreement with entities interested in further development of this device to be tested and analysed further under specific research calls.
