A blockchain-based system for registered electronic delivery of data offered for licensing
A Spanish research team specialized in the development of e-commerce protocols, has developed a novel blockchain-based technology to provide multiparty certified electronic delivery of data. Researchers from a Spanish university specialized in the field of security and e-commerce protocols have developed a novel protocol for certified notifications and deliveries of confidential or public digital data. The Registered eDelivery requires the use of protocols that provide evidence of delivery execution. Those allow a sender to prove that she/he has sent a message to a receiver as well as that a receiver has an access to a message since a speciﬁc date and time. Certified delivery services, along with other electronic services, such as electronic signature of contracts or electronic purchase, require an equitable exchange of elements between two or more users. To solve this problem traditional solutions include Trusted Third Parties (TTPs) that manage exchanges and are responsible for resolving any conflict that arises as a result of interrupted exchanges or fraud attempts. Nevertheless, TTPs are an obstacle to extending the use of protocols in the network as: it is difficult to find TTPs that are really trustworthy for any user; TTPs can cause problems at a technical level, namely lack of efficiency and increase in the cost of protocol execution; the exchange can be broken if a TTP has a vulnerability. The proposed protocol is a method for notifications and delivery of certified messages, which generates a non-repudiable evidence of both sending and receiving messages, in addition to confirmation of the status of completion or cancellation of the delivery, where no TTP is used but a blockchain. The technology permits tracing the delivery of messages, controlling the flow of data exchange through the function of smart contracts in a blockchain that can be invoked by recipients and a sender. The method also guarantees the integrity of the data. The items to be exchanged are: - Message: both the text belonging to a notification as a file or record of digital data of any kind. The messages can be confidential or public. - Proof of non-repudiation of issuance and receipt, which prevents the issuer/recipient from denying the issuance/reception of the specific message. Companies in the ICT sector who wish to implement and commercialize the technology via license agreement are being sought.
Advantages and innovations
The most important advantage of the method is that it provides a decentralized application based on blockchain technology that eliminates the need of Trusted Third Party (TTP) participation compared with traditional approaches. The developed technology guarantees non-repudiation of origin and reception, together with integrity of the information. These characteristics satisfy the requirements of the European Union Regulation for registered eDeliveries.
