Description

The Italian company has developed an innovative process for the decontamination of large amounts of water through the removal of both radioactive and non-radioactive ions at any concentration level. Decontamination is based on the absorption of the ions present in water by an iron phosphate-based material, followed by the direct vitrification of the sorbent (and absorbed contaminants) into an extremely resistant glass suitable for disposal. Generally speaking, the process can be applied for the absorption of any type of cation in liquid phase and has been specifically verified, at the laboratory level, on cesium, strontium, cobalt, nickel, antimony and uranium. The volume of the final product is minimal, no secondary contamination is produced and costs are very competitive. As a research company, it does not market and sell products directly to end-users. The company is interested in developing win-win partnerships to bring products and services based on the company’s technology to the market. In particular, the company would like to find industrial partners able to technically test the new device and bring the technology to market under a technical cooperation agreement.

Advantages and innovations

The inorganic absorber developed by the company features a unique set of advantages: •it's a low-cost material; •it's an efficient absorber, able to absorb up to 10% of its weight in radioactive cations; •it can be directly vitrified without the need to add any other component, keeping the final volume to a minimum and thus reducing the costs of final disposal; •it vitrifies into a highly resistant glass ideal for long-term storage; and •the process does not produce any secondary contamination.
