A Singapore academic and research institute has developed novel nanofoam metal current collectors using the ultrasonic synthetic method. They improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries, resulting in better charge/discharge rates in lithium-ion batteries. The Singapore-based institute seeks to partner SMEs of all sizes or MNEs. The institute has developed innovative nanofoam metal current collectors using a low cost and scalable ultrasonic method. The nanoporous foam collectors are designed to prepare copper metal for the anode and aluminum or nickel for the cathode of batteries. The nanoporous foam collectors improve the electrochemical retention and cycling stability properties of lithium-ion batteries. Based on the results from measurements made on lithium-ion batteries after 500 cycles of charge/discharge, it was concluded that batteries assembled with nanofoam metal current collectors exhibited superior performance of 10.1% compared to commercially available batteries. This innovative solution is expected to find applications in electric vehicles and electronic devices. It can also be used as a high surface area catalyst support in various applications. The Singapore institute is keen to establish partnerships with industry players such as MNEs or SMEs of all sizes by licensing this technology.
