An integrated liquid cool battery pack enclosure
A Singapore SME has developed a novel liquid-cooling / heating battery pack, where the coolant loops are 3D-integrated into an enclosure. It can carry coolants to each individual cell in a grid structure, and ensures highly efficient, consistent and uniform heat transfer from each cell in a battery pack, thus extending lifespan and safety. The company seeks to partner SMEs from France or EUREKA participating countries via licensing or technical cooperation.

Environmental pollution concerns and high fuel costs are driving the automotive industry towards Electric Vehicles (EVs). While Lithium Ion (Li-ion) cells are a commonly adopted energy source for EVs, they require proper temperature control to function properly. Most Li-ion batteries achieve their rated capacity at 20-25°C and their capacity will drop ~10% for every increase of 10°C. Regulating the battery temperature during continuous charge and discharge is a challenge, especially in temperate climates. Existing cooling solutions consist of battery modules sitting on or attached to heat sinks that are in turn cooled by a coolant loop. The drawbacks are that the cooling efficiency is low, and the effectiveness is poor, since only a small part of each module receives the cooling effect. Besides, heat sinks are generally thick and heavy due to the coolant loop. The result is that temperatures will differ from module to module and cell to cell. Even within the same cell, different regions may have different temperatures. Battery packs used in EVs are constrained by space and weight, so cooling systems for the battery packs must be compact and lightweight yet meet the cooling requirements. The Singapore SME's patented battery pack thermal management technology is able to carry the coolant to each individual cell in a compact structure. The novel system integrates coolant loops into an enclosed grid structure, welded together simultaneously by a continuous atmospheric brazing (CAB) process. The system ensures the consistent and uniform heat transfer from each cell in a battery pack, thus extending lifespan and safety by allowing batteries to operate in their optimum temperature range (10 - 35°C). Charging and discharging can also take place in all ambient temperature. The battery pack cooling system is designed for easy fabrication using standard manufacturing techniques which includes: - Aluminium alloy extrusion of Multi Port Tube (MPT) - small or micron channel) - Aluminium alloy Controlled Atmosphere Brazing (CAB ) techniques Technology specifications can be customised. It is not only used for EV, but also for Energy Storage System (ESS) and other areas like Marine. The Singapore company can also design, manufacture and supply the customised battery pack enclosure. The company is keen to partner SMEs from France or EUREKA participating countries in the following types of collaborations: i) Licensing - the partner could license the Singapore company's technology and develop it further to new products and services ii) Technical cooperation agreement - Resources and skills are shared between both partners to further the development of the technology.
