Innovative directional gamma ray source detector for strengthening Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear security
Slovenian SME specialized in ICT has developed an innovative gamma-ray source locator. Its main advantage is significantly shortened time one needs to find the radioactive source. Nowadays CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) security becomes more and more important issue in the world due to different health, security, environmental and other issues including terroristic treaths. Existing technology solutions that help us prevent CBRN threats can be divided into two groups: - Classic detectors measure the current gamma-ray dose rate at the detector position. When compared to the AISense Gamma IV, they lack the directional capability. - Gamma Cameras are directionally sensitive devices with imaging capability, usable. They need static conditions with exposition time ranging from a minute to even few hours. When compared with the new one, they lack the dynamic workflow – these are not real-time instruments. At the same time the gamma cameras are noticeably expensive. Slovenian SME, active in ICT sector, specialized in HPC and cloud computing services, development of web and mobile solutions and research & development has lately developed an innovative gamma-ray source locator, surpassing all others in the market by its technical capabilities. The device offered by Slovenian company is unique in many technical specifications. It is the first handheld instrument that provides the direction vector towards a gamma-ray source in real time, within the entire spatial angle of possible directions. This fundamentally changes the way gamma-ray sources are searched for, and results in a dramatic shortening of search operations. Consequently, a significantly lower radiation dose is received by the personnel. The device is also able to acquire gamma-ray energy spectra information and use it for radionuclide identification (Nuclide ID). The device also detects the presence of neutrons, often indicative of fissionable Special Nuclear Materials. The gamma-ray source locator is easy to use, and offers a steep learning curve for introduction into operations. Although it is primarily designed to be used as a handheld device, it can also be controlled remotely. It can be connected (wired or via Bluetooth) to a smart device, a personal computer (Windows or Linux, Mac OS on demand), or other digital system capable of serial communication. A dedicated application on Android device is available and can optionally bridge all communication over the internet for further examination or analysis. The company offers commercial agreement with technical assistance or research cooperation agreement. Commercial agreement with technical assistance is offered to governmental and EU/national entities (civil protection, customs, fire brigades, medical organisations…) and other organizations that are working to increase cross-sectoral preparedness of agencies and authorities to CBRN incidents via trainings, exercises and improvement of law enforcement CBRN training facilities. The company believes that a structural approach with common knowledge will result in better CBRN preparedness. Research cooperation agreement is offered R&D organisations, universities, governmental authorities and alternatively to large companies and infrastructure organizations, such as railways, ports or fire brigades. All these organizations have an interest to improve their preparedness on CBRN field, especially along with the global increase in radiation security risks during the recent years. The research project idea is to work on improvement of existing standard procedures and introducing new ones. The goal of the research project would be achieved by combining the experience the agencies and other entities already have in the field together with technical expertise and new technology the Slovenian company is offering.
